Data & Controls

Knowledge - Data - Environment - Governance - People

Focusing on the bottom 5 layers of the Data Value Stack, where strong foundations support the value creation

Knowledge: Business Information & KPIs

Everyone wants a dashboard. Avoid analysis paralysis. Accept the 1 version of the truth for all. Do it right - KPIs, Calculations, BI set-up, teach/learn how to Self-serve. Not every calculation is a KPI, some are specific to a certain view so understand what is that decision is  and focus on the few KPIs that advise the decision to be made well.

“Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice” - Anton Chekhov

Data

A massive topic but the intention here is to cover a few topics is to assist where actions or correcting mistakes can shift the needle. Use 1st, 2nd and 3rd party data. Create ‘1 version of the truth’ for all, judge by quality, completeness, usefulness, cost.

"You can have data without information, but you cannot have information without data" - Daniel Keys Moran

Governance & Environment

Governance: Ways of Working with stakeholders and suppliers – how capabilities are created via distinct deliverables. Compliance to Privacy and other laws - don’t get fined.

Environment: From on-prem excel to big data in the cloud, but is usually a complex hybrid. Plan for the future as it’s expensive and takes time to pivot. Privacy controls here are vital – data democracy does not mean everyone gets access to everything.

People & Skills

People wear different hats. Width and depth of many skills are required to deliver data projects. Some skills can be infilled in the short term or set up to back-fill cheaper.
